EAST “voyage“ on sailing barge Victor

On Tuesday 24th September 2013 twenty-two members and guests of EAST set sail on the sailing barge Victor for a cruise down the Orwell.

The fog had started to lift but was slow to clear because of the lack of wind. We left the Old Custom House Quay and proceeded through the lock gates. The light wind was straight on the nose and so we had to motor down the Orwell. The sun tried to break out, leaving us with a slight haze, and the weather was warm so all were on deck and enjoyed going under the Orwell Bridge.

We enjoyed our picnics along with tea, coffee and beer purchased from Victor’s galley. We motored down to Felixstowe, passed the loading and discharging container ships, where we turned.
On returning up the Orwell, Wes and his crew were able to set the topsail, jib and mizzen and release the top part of the main. With a following wind and tide we had a leisurely sail back to Ipswich.

We are grateful to Dave Westwood and Steve Godwin for allowing us to use Victor for a fundraising event, and to the crew for their hospitality.
